Meet your guides

The Mission of Sharing

We’ve started this project to share our knowledge with those coming to Coimbra to learn & experience the city through the lenses of a local. It is thanks to our passion for Portuguese history & culture, as well as our time abroad, that we’ve gathered a unique insight about Coimbra, which we wish to pass onto others. 

Our goal is to provide tourists and visitors a unique insight into Coimbra’s history, by highlighting important monuments, talking about the history of the city and the country, showing visitors our favorite places along with hidden gems, and the best tips to fully enjoy the city!

Marta Passos

Our local guide Marta is passionate about Portuguese history, local traditions, and sharing knowledge with others. 

“Coimbra is a very unique city for many reasons. Here we have one of the oldest universities in Europe, unique student traditions, and beautiful architecture. The city blends centuries of history with a lively academic atmosphere, creating a place where culture and learning go hand in hand. From the narrow medieval streets of the Alta to the riverside charm of the Baixa, Coimbra offers an environment rich in character and inspiration. And of course, Coimbra’s kind people and delicious food, from traditional dishes to convent-inspired sweets, make the city not only fascinating to explore but also unforgettable to experience.

“If you want an excellent tour of fascinating sites, you have to request Gomes with Explore Coimbra! I have never had a tour guide, in all my travels, with such a wide (ie. what religions or political factors drove development or movement of people to the area) & deep (ie. names, timelines, relationships, incidents) knowledge of all background aspects of sites and monuments or notable areas. He speaks amazing English and provides info on the setting (what was going on at the time) to provide context, intros the point of interest, and patiently takes questions.
